Asay’s presentation at Open Tuesday

Mikko pointed me to Matt Asay’s presentation at Open Tuesday last April, where Matt has basically condensed his main ideas on open source businesses in 33 slides. Most of it has already appeared on his blog on different posts but it is never bad to have a review. Anyway, for the lazy ones who will not even bother to open the file, I have selected the most interesting slide from my point of view:

Basic ingredients of a successful open source company/project:

  • Market timing: well-understood market is easiest
  • Prepare for participation: documentation, modularity, accessibility of language, etc
  • Great initial code base
  • Degree of applicability
  • Modularity of code
  • License to fit the needs (GPL, LGPL, BSD)
